Andrew Asquith has Saturday's best bets from around the tracks, his Nap selection running in the big sprint handicap at York.
Saturday selections
MARCHOGION – 3.35 York (NAP)
A typically competitive sprint handicap for the track, but MARCHOGION looks one to follow on the back of his recent Newmarket success where he proved much too strong for the reopposing American Style.
That was just his third start on turf and he duly proved himself well handicapped having caught the eye a couple of occasions on the all-weather this year, always travelling well on the far wing and proving strong at the finish.
A subsequent 7lb rise does demand more, but that performance was backed up by the clock, he’s totally unexposed on turf, and should get a good gallop to aim at, while he also has an attractive draw in stall 4.
BRIZE NORTON – 3.15 Sandown
BRIZE NORTON progressed with each start last season in races which have worked out well, and he landed the odds in good style on his return at Kempton to deservedly open his .
He set the standard on form but actually progressed further to get his head in front on his first start since being gelded, making all of the running and quickening up nicely from two furlongs out.
Brize Norton is a home bred, from a family that thrives as they mature more, and he’s definitely one to keep on the right side now handicapping, an opening mark of 83 likely to underestimate him.
POMME POMME – 3.43 Bath
POMME POMME has proved a different proposition since entering handicaps, not obviously well fancied when making a winning start in this sphere over this course and distance, but appreciating the longer trip.
She has gone from strength to strength since, following up in similarly easy fashion at Wolverhampton eight days later, and running her best race to date when completing a hat-trick at Chepstow a fortnight ago.
Pomme Pomme is 6lb higher in the weights now, but she is a filly who is yet to reach her ceiling judged by her latest success, and is taken to continue her winning run in a slightly stronger race.
SOLAR ACLAIM – 4.30 Chester
SOLAR ACLAIM is a horse who is very effective when the ground is on the easy side and he duly attracted for a soft-ground handicap at Epsom last week.
He shaped much better than the bare result on that occasion, too, making rapid headway out wide two furlongs out, but he was just unable to sustain that effort in the closing stages.
Solar Aclaim did too much too soon that day, so he’s well worth another chance to prove himself well treated with Cieren Fallon taking over in the saddle, with his chance increased if the forecast rain arrives.
BIG BEE HIVE – 6.10 Uttoxeter
BIG BEE HIVE is a three-time winner over fences, and produced his best effort to date over hurdles when resuming winning ways in this sphere at Southwell earlier this month.
He had sort of lost his way over fences, but wasted no time returning to form off a lower hurdles mark, looming up out wide on the home turn and having something in hand at the line.
This looks a deeper race, but a subsequent 5lb rise leaves him fairly treated, and a similar performance will see him be very competitive once more.
WELL EDUCATED – 6.28 Hexham
WELL EDUCATED won back-to-back handicaps around this time last year, including one over course and distance, and he again signalled he’s ready to strike when runner-up back at this venue last month.
He went like the best horse at the weights that day, only to be picked off in the final 100 yards by one who came from further back. His jockey will likely try hold on to him for longer this time and he’s well worth another chance to prove this mark a lenient one.
HINITSA BAY – 6.50 Leicester
HINITSA BAY showed improved form on his handicap debut when runner-up over a mile at Yarmouth two starts back, keeping up the gallop well given how enthusiastic he was early on, and he pulled well clear of the remainder.
ittedly, he wasn’t in the same form over seven furlongs at the same course last time, but he again did too much too soon, and he remains a horse to be interested in, especially now moving down into classified company under a different jockey. He looks the one to beat at these weights in a weak race.
